Self-reflection, the practice of looking inward to examine one’s experiences, values, and aspirations, is essential for personal growth and well-being. Yet meaningful reflection is often difficult to initiate and sustain, as it demands considerable cognitive and emotional effort. Generative AI opens new possibilities for supporting this process, offering creative and interactive ways to help people explore, articulate, and revisit their thoughts about themselves. Under this research theme, we investigate how generative AI can serve as a reflective partner that scaffolds and enriches self-reflective practices. Our research explores AI-mediated tools, ranging from AI-generated visual and textual prompts to conversational interactions, that help individuals engage more deeply with their own stories, surface latent values, and gain fresh perspectives on who they are and who they wish to become. By designing systems that respect individual agency and adapt to diverse personal contexts, we aim to unlock the reflective potential of generative AI, ultimately empowering people to understand themselves with greater clarity and intentionality.
